 Spring Summer Ohio State Opportunities 2010

This issue contains activities open to K-12 teachers and their students. Some are available at any time during entire school year. Others are one-time activities available during spring and summer.

 

LiFE Sports Summer Camp

The LiFE Sports Camp is designed to provide 600 youth ages 9-15 from the Columbus area with the opportunity to participate in a FREE four-week summer sports camp. Youth participants play in a variety of sports including soccer, basketball, football, lacrosse, swimming, softball/baseball, volleyball, and social dance.  As a requirement for camp participation, all youth are able to access a free health physical.

There is a one day registration for the program on May 15, 2010. Participant applications must be turned in at the designated sites (Martha Morehouse Medical Plaza or Boys and Girls Club of Columbus). In addition, all campers must have a physical exam to participate in camp. FREE physicals will be available at Martha Morehouse Medical Plaza. Campers may also bring documentation that they have had a physical when they turn in their participant application to either location.

 

LiFE Sports Youth Leadership Camp

The LiFE Sports Youth Leadership camp is designed to provide youth ages 15-18 with an opportunity to develop and enhance their leadership skills.  This camp runs concurrently with the LiFE Sports Camp and allows older youth to serve in the role of $B!H(Jcamp counselor.$B!I(J  These youth are mentored by current camp counselors.  Additionally, programming is provided each week that specifically targets key leadership skills such as interpersonal communication, problem-solving, goal setting, ethical behavior, and social responsibility. This camp will be offered for the first time in the Summer of 2010.

Play Games. Learn Economics. Get Paid.

What: Two, one-day workshop on $B!H(Jexperimental economics$B!I(J at Ohio State for high-school students.

When: Tuesday, June 29thth or Wednesday, June 30th, 2010, from 10am to 4:30pm. (Parking & lunch will be provided.)

Where: Arps Hall Room 318, 1945 N. High Street, Ohio State Campus, Columbus, OH 43210

Who: Any local high-school student currently in their freshman, sophomore, or junior year.

Come to Ohio State$B!G(Js campus for a one-day workshop where you$B!G(Jll play economic $B!H(Jgames$B!I(J in our research laboratory, learn about current topics in economics and $B!H(Jgame theory$B!I(J, and(J—(Jbest of all(J—(Jget paid based on how well you play! Earnings will be between $40 and $100 per person, depending on performance. You$B!G(Jll also get a taste of what life is like in a college classroom $B!D(J and maybe even discover your future career!

Teaching Growing America, Farm to Market

Sponsored by the Past Foundation & The Ed Council, Teaching Growing America offers teachers the opportunity to brainstorm their own program drawing on the expertise of an existing program and a well-structured approach to building projects.

Dates: July 26-July 27th, and July 31st

Location: Metro High School & OSU Watermann Farms

Cost $100 per participant

CEU credit: 12 hours

Summer Opportunities for Middle School Students

There are several exciting learning opportunities this Summer for our middle school students. Please take the time to read the many activity descriptions below.

Apply by May 3 for OSU Summer Enrichment Program
Students entering ninth or 10th grade in the fall of 2010 are encouraged to apply to the Ohio State University Summer Enrichment Program, offered by the Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center Monday (6/14)-Friday (6/18). The week-long workshop will introduce students to the art of spoken-word poetry and provide them with a variety of critical, creative, and constructive tools for discovering their individual truths. Summer Kids and Teen Arts Fusion

REGISTRATION NOW OPEN
March 15- June 13, 2010

Registration for the Wexner Center’s weeklong, half-day summer workshops for kids and teens has opened to the public. These innovative classes are taught by top-notch artists/educators from the community and university. They tend to fill up fast, so register soon, and as a benefit of membership you receive a discount.

Registration fees are $95 per student, per workshop for the general public. Members save with registration fees of just $75 per student, per workshop. Registration fees include materials and equipment. Scholarships are available for children who would otherwise be unable to attend such a program; download an application. The scholarship application deadline is April 16.

Please note: Many workshops fill quickly. If you have any questions please call our education department at (614) 292-6493. Outside of regular business hours (9 AM–5 PM weekdays), priority will be given to people using online registration.

Department of Physics hosts annual GRASP Summer Camp
The OSU Department of Physics and the Society of Women in Physics are hosting the third annual GRASP (Girls Reaching to Achieve in Sports and Physics) Summer Camp from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday (6/14)-Friday (6/18). This camp provides girls, entering grades 6-9 in autumn 2010, with the tools and experience to see the power and fun in physics. The camp will include both academic and activity sessions.
